The Story Behind the INVENTION

I was 14 years old when I witnessed a car just miss colliding with young children on their way to school one dark winter morning. Around the same time, I learned from a tragic news story about fatal collisions that a US pedestrian is struck by a motor vehicle every 10 minutes on average and much more frequently in the dark. I discovered that the biggest risk factor (in 3 of every 4 collisions) is poor visibility in darkness and that commonly, pedestrians are not in a driver’s field of view until it is too late.

But what if pedestrians could dramatically improve their visibility with an elevated, hands-free, bright light to help drivers see them earlier and prevent collisions? Surely, if those children had something like this on that dark winter morning attached to their backpacks, they would not have been in the same danger. When I could not find such a device, I began working on a prototype. The CRiMPLE was born!

How it WORKS

CRiMPLE (Collision Risk Mitigation Pedestrian Light Emitter)

This hands-free, portable, extendable light is designed to prevent a motor vehicle collision with a pedestrian by improving visibility to a driver. Preschool or school-age children who may lack situational awareness around streets, physically or cognitively impaired adults crossing the street at night, or simply anyone walking along a road in the dark can increase their visibility to motor vehicles. A tall light is more likely to enter a driver’s field of view than other visibility equipment. This light can attach to various objects, such as a backpack, vest, bicycle, stroller, or wheelchair.

Patent Details

This device has two main forms. In its folded configuration, it is compact to facilitate storage and transport. In its unfolded configuration, it can attach in multiple ways, including tension and fastening mechanisms, before extending the light. Components include two foldable legs, a light emitter, a power source, and a locking mechanism.  While the patent includes claims relating to enabling the user to see better in the dark, the primary intention is to help the user be seen. The light indicates the pedestrian’s presence via a continuous or strobing light in a driver’s field of vision. For additional details, please view the utility patent information by clicking here.
